Our Mission and Ministries

We are called to give of our time, talent and treasure for the sake of Christ’s church. God has blessed all our lives, and our confidence in the future is strengthened when we reflect on what God has done for us in the past.

Please prayerfully consider your “first fruit” giving to the church with your many talents and the gift of your time. We would like each confirmed member of the congregation to consider how you can use the gifts God has given you in love and service to church and neighbor. Would you please complete this Mission and Ministries form and return it to the church?

And let all of us give thanks to God for the many blessings in our lives, as we are renewed and refreshed in our calling to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the world.

Confirmation Ministry

Youth in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are invited into our Confirmation Ministry. This three-year journey is a fun yet intense time to grow in the understanding of our faith. At the end of these years of exploration, youth are prepared to affirm the promises of their baptism, say “yes” to God, and confirm their faith in Jesus.

Confirmation Ministry meets most Wednesdays of the school year (September to May) from 6:00-7:30pm. Our three-year rotation allows for one year each tackling the Old Testament, New Testament, and Catechism (the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Apostles Creed). Large group sessions include games, songs, videos, learning, and thinking. Then pairs of caring adult sponsors lead small group time, when students meet with their peers to review, share, and ponder questions. We end the evening as a large group with a closing time of singing and prayer.

Confirmation Ministry involves more than just Wednesday nights. We take field trips each semester to connect our faith with the rest of the world. We also spend time at Lutherdale Bible Camp for a spring weekend retreat and a week of summer camp. Students are expected to have regular worship attendance, to serve as acolytes during worship, to join for Sunday morning youth group, and to complete hours of community service. It’s all about building the habits of a life of faith, which include worship, prayer, study, and service.

In these ways, the church partners with parents to help our children know and trust God. Most faith formation happens in the home. Families have a critical role in this journey, supporting and encouraging their children to make the most of this experience. It can be a great time for all members of the family to grow in faith. All our sessions are open to parents and rely on the leadership of adult sponsors. All together, the evenings and the years add up to a formative experience on our lifelong journey of faith.

All confirmed members of St. John’s are invited to assist at Saturday and Sunday worship services. The assisting minister will actively participate in leading worship alongside the pastor.

Additional contributions to the service include serving communion, reading, ushering, and operating the projector or soundboard. For further information about these responsibilities or to volunteer your services, please contact the church office.

Families and church groups are invited to use their baking talents to provided treats following each Sunday morning worship service. Coffee and juice supplies are provided by the church. You may sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex or by contacting the church office.

Make fellowship a part of your Sunday morning experience at St. John’s. Grab a treat and a cup of coffee. Greet an old friend or meet a new one. Ask someone what their name is, how long they’ve been around St. John’s, and how they spend their days. You might learn something new and make a new friend. Then we’ll all head off to learning hour at 10:15am.

The Dorcas Circle meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at 1:30 p.m. for Bible study and fellowship in our homes. We use the magazine the “Lutheran Woman Today” as our guide. Our members participate in many projects that reach out to others, including quilting,  the coffee fellowship, the bazaar, worship and raising money for projects around the church.

Anyone is welcome to join us in the study of God’s word. Please contact Glenace Smelcer at 882-5726 for further information.
