St. John’s added to State Register of Historic Places

Congratulations, St. John’s! Our facility is now officially on the
Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places! See the certificate on
display in the narthex (gathering area). In addition, the State of
Wisconsin has nominated St. John’s for listing on the National Register
of Historic Places. Stay tuned for more news.
Built in 1958 and designed by John W. Steinmann, our current building is
noted for its significant architecture and its contribution to the modern
movement (1958-1970). Steinmann’s work was deeply influenced by
Frank Lloyd Wright. Buildings that belong to religious institutions are
often not eligible for listing as a historic place. However, our facility is
highly significant for its architectural and artistic distinction, serving as a
“very fine example of the Wrightian style.” What’s more, all buildings on
the Historic Register must be at least 50 years old. While our sanctuary
was built in 1958, the addition was not completed until 1970. However,
the state commission believes that “the 1970 addition actually represents
the completion of the church,” and that the exterior and interior of the
addition were completed in a way that the entire church building “still
retains a very high degree of integrity.”
As for the work of John W. Steinmann, our church building “is one of the
most outstanding of his known projects. The significance of the brick and
wood-clad St. John’s Lutheran Church is considerably enhanced by a
superb condition and by the high degree of integrity that is still present in
the fabric of the church today.”
For a complete description of our historic building, stop by the church
office to see the complete registration. What a great honor for St. John’s,
especially in this year that we celebrate our 75th anniversary! Be proud,
St. John’s…even our building has integrity.
Stock Giving is an option!

If you’re looking for an additional way to share your resources,
contribute to the work of God’s church, and strengthen the ministry of St.
John’s, consider a gift of stock. Our Financial Director Shelly Andrew is
now prepared to receive our gifts in this way. (finances@stjohns-lc.org)
Also, remember the Mission Endowment Fund as an excellent way to
give…the gift that keeps on giving. Gifts to the Mission Endowment
Fund are invested; while the principal remains, the interest is used to
support the church in a variety of ways.

Next summer we’re heading to New Orleans, LA! All youth entering 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grades in fall 2012 – and 2012 high school
graduates – are invited to attend the ELCA Youth Gathering. This incredible event only happens every 3 years and is a week to remember
forever. And we’re going!!
Becca Poock will be coordinating the event for St. John’s and helping to prepare us for a week of a lifetime…and a lifetime of following Jesus
and serving others. Contact Becca at 515-230-8286 or beccapoock@gmail.com for more information or to learn how to get
involved. Also visit www.elca.org/gathering for the latest information.
In the meantime, mark your calendars, start saving your pennies, and, if you haven’t already, let Becca (or Pastor Matt) know that you’re
interested in coming along. New Orleans, here we come!

Last month our St. John’s Up All Night event was a huge hit! Thanks to Kathy Wells, Keith Hennig, and Deb Herbers for helping it to be such a
huge success. Over 60 youth, grades 6th-12th, joined in for games, songs, food, and fun! There’s more to come of this for youth at St. John’s!
Soon it will be time to welcome our new 6th graders into Middle School ministry, and to launch events for high school youth only. If you’d like to help make it happen, we need you! Talk to Kathy Wells, Keith Hennig, Carl Korfmacher, or Pastor Matt.
Plans are in the works for some great events this summer. They might take the shape of a minor league baseball game for youth and families, a canoe trip down the Sugar River, and other great events outdoors. Share your email address with the church office to make sure you hear the latest news. And don’t hesitate to share your ideas and your willingness to help! Passing the gift of faith to our children and youth is one of the best things we can do for them for a great future. There’s no better way to go through life than living securely in God’s love for you and for the world.
